Upper extremity lymphedema is a potentially serious consequence of breast cancer after mastectomy. It is a medical condition that may develop due to stagnation of high protein fluid in body tissue that causes complications such as swelling, pain and loss of function. Therapy can be beneficial to these patients to educate them regarding their condition and prevention of further complications. Manual lymphatic drainage techniques and therapeutic exercises can be utilized to stimulate flow of lymphatics. The patient will be taught a specific home exercise program to manage the condition. |

After breast reconstruction such as TRAM and tissue expanders as well as after cosmetic surgery, patients often develop difficulties in the shoulder, axillary area and lateral chest wall. Difficulties range from tightness in the shoulder capsule, axillary edema, upper limb transient edema, scar bands and nerve irritation to name a few. These patients are often fearful to move for worries of injury or pain and therefore develop limitations in range of motion, strength and inability to perform activities of daily living. Patients are instructed in a detailed home stretching and massage program. |
